Let's update the Record Searchlight Wikipedia entry today

Hi folks, well, looks like some of us could take some time today and update the Wikipedia page for the Record Searchlight. Some things that come to mind:

1. When was the last time this "award-winning" paper actually won an award?

2. Wikipedia states that the Record Searchlight has a "daily circulation of 44,000." Ah, that sounds a little high to me, but then again, I'm not in the biz.

3. Jim Dyar and Christy Lochrie are still listed under "Features." Ah, Jim ain't coming back to the newspaper (as far as I know) and who knows what that other person is doing while she's out on "Disability" or whatever.

4. Thom Gabrukiewicz, is listed as the Outdoors Editor. Is he?

5. You might also update the list of "On-Line Bloggers." Double-check for any that are actually getting paid to blog.

6. According to Wikipedia, Bruce Ross doesn't work at the paper, nor is he on the "Editorial Club/Board."

Hello...
Just couldn't let this one go.
Regarding awards:
Last award was August 4, 2007 (published on that date) for the 2007 Associated Press Managing Editors Award in the First Amendement category. This was for the legal fight to obtain records from a Siskiyou Co. high school district.
The APME is an association of editors from 1,500 AP member newspapers in the U.S and Canada. The Record Searchlight was judged among papers in the under 40,000 circulation category. (I'll talk about that in a minute)
The next round of awards was in July 2007.
The R/S won three first-place awards and one second-place award from the California Newspaper Publishers Association. The competition was against daily newspapers that have a circulation between 25,001 and 75,000. To compete and win against newspapers in the higher circulation brackets is wonderful and deserves bragging rights.
Presentation of awards this year won't be determined until sometime this summer for 2007 accomplishments.
Once those announcements have been made, then you can start snickering if the R/S doesn't make a good showing. But please, do not denigerate the accomplishments of those who have worked so hard previously.
The term "award-winning" is still a valid description.
As for the circulation... you are correct. It is down, along with every single other newspaper in this country. I believe daily is at around 32,000 with weekend at 38,000. That is not verified. Just what I remember.
This is not a local problem, this is a global problem.
It bothers me because it means our citizens are no longer educating themselves in all viewpoints so they may make better choices in how and who they decide will govern their lives.
In order to better understand your enemy, you must study them and their philosophies.
I am still a staunch newspaper defender and am saddened by the barbs sent by "Death of a Newspaper."
I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death my right, and your right to say it!
If you don't like the paper, start your own, not just a blog which holds no responsiblity for accuracy to anyone. Nor do you offer any solutions. So, what's your point?

Well, since you ask, Ryan Sabalow won an award for investigative reporting -- um -- today:

I'm right with you, Chris. As an R-S alum, it always gets my hackles up when people start attacking the newspaper using incorrect information. I do think things there are going downhill rapidly, because when I worked there the paper was still good and not a complete laughingstock. But we all know Marge is not a reporter or journalist and has not been trained as such, so we might want to take her blog with a grain of salt. After all, it is just her opinion.

And I was going to come here and mention Ryan's award, but anon beat me to it. Oh well....
